Samsung’s slogan for the Galaxy S9 is “Camera Reimagined,” and the high scores the Galaxy S9+ scored in the DxOMark test also prove this. So how does Samsung achieve a significant increase in camera capabilities on this phone? The answer has to be found in its camera.

The YouTube channel JerryRigEverything recently sacrificed a Samsung Galaxy S9 to explore the secrets by disassembling the camera. Although iFixit has already disassembled this phone, it just removed the camera. In this disassembly, we were able to glimpse the internal structure of the S9 camera.

One of the features of the Galaxy S9 in terms of photography is the addition of a variable aperture, which is the first time in the field of smart phones. On top of its camera, Samsung added a ring-shaped blade to switch between two aperture values (f/1.5 and f/2.4) by contraction and expansion. This mechanism is somewhat similar to the way SLRs provide multiple aperture values, but there are some significant differences.

The aperture of the SLR camera uses a plurality of blades arranged in a fan shape, and the aperture value is not limited to two. Although the Galaxy S9 has this limitation, it is enough to admire Samsung’s ability to put similar functions into such a small space.

JerryRigEverything’s disassembly is not just to understand the difficulty of equipment maintenance, after the disassembly is completed, they will put all the parts back to see if the equipment can still work. Like last year’s Galaxy S8 and Note 8, the Galaxy S9 has successfully completed this challenge, but the warranty service is definitely gone.
